RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between dissociative experiences, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and psychiatric symptoms exhibited by schizophrenic patients 35 years after the Tangshan earthquake. METHODS: Seventy-one schizophrenic patients who had experienced the Tangshan earthquake were selected and evaluated by the Post-traumatic Dissociative Experience Questionnaire (PDEQ), thPTSD Checklist-Civilian Version (PCL-C), and the Positive and Negative Symptom Scale (PANSS). RESULTS: The score of Group B (re-experiencing symptoms) in PCL-C was significantly positively correlated with age and significantly negatively correlated with the course of schizophrenia. Both gender and marriage were significantly positively correlated with the score of PCL-C Group D (irritability symptoms caused by hyperarousal). The PDEQ score was negatively correlated with thecourse of schizophrenia and positively correlated with the presence of sleep difficulties. Significant differences were found between the PCL-C scores of the positive and negative symptoms of the three core symptom groups; the positive rate of Group B was significantly higher than that of Group D, and the positive rate of Group C was significantly higher than that of Group D. The PCL-C total score was positively correlated with the negative symptom factor score of PANSS; Group C's symptoms were significantly negativelycorrelated with the positive factor score of PNASS; andGroup D's' symptoms were significantly negatively correlated with the PANSS total score and the positive factor score. CONCLUSION: When consiering patients with schizophrenia post the Tangshan earthquake, age, gender, and marital status were all positively correlated with PTSD. The course of schizophrenia was negatively associated with PTSD and dissociative experiences. PTSD was positively correlated with the negative symptoms of schizophrenia and negatively correlated with the positive symptoms of schizophrenia. Thus, the conditions and symptoms of PTSD may interact with those of schizophrenia.

RESUMO

A Ti-34Nb-13Ta-5Zr (TNT5Zr) ß Ti alloy with a high strength-to-modulus ratio has been developed, showing its potential to become another candidate material in load-bearing implant applications. This work mainly investigates the microstructural evolution, mechanical properties, and biocompatibility of a post-processing-treated TNT5Zr alloy manufactured via selective laser melting (SLM). Transmission electron microscopy observation shows the existence of the single beta grain matrix and alpha precipitates along the grain boundary in the SLM + HIP manufactured TNT5Zr alloy (TNT5Zr-AF + HIP), and ellipsoidal nano-sized intragranular α″ precipitates (approx. 5-10 nm) were introduced after the subsequent low-temperature aging treatment. The precipitation strengthening enables the SLM + HIP + aging manufactured TNT5Zr (TNT5Zr-AF + HIPA) alloy to show a comparable ultimate tensile strength (853 ± 9 MPa) to that of the reference material (Ti64-AF + HIP, 926 ± 23 MPa). Including the inferior notch-like surface of the test pieces, the slip-band cracking that occurs in this ductile TNT5Zr-AF + HIPA alloy is regarded as the main factor in determining its fatigue strength (170 MPa). In vitro short-term biocompatibility evaluation reveals almost no significant difference in the preosteoblast viability, differentiation, and mineralization between TNT5Zr-AF + HIPA and the reference biomaterial (Ti64-AF + HIP).

RESUMO

This study investigates Ti-Nb-Ta based ß alloys with different zirconium additions (0, 5, 9 wt%) manufactured by SLM. A low level of as-fabricated defects is obtained: the relative density of TNT (Z) alloys is >99.97% with the keyhole size in a range of 3-20 µm. BF TEM images combining SAD patterns of TNT(Z) alloys show single ß phase obtained inside the beta matrix; BF-STEM images reveal potential nano-scale grain boundary alpha phase precipitation. Zirconium functions as a neutral element in these high ß-stabilized Ti-Nb-Ta based alloys. An increase in Vickers hardness and UTS caused by zirconium additions is observed, which is explained by beta grain refinement because higher degree of undercooling occurs. Corrosion ions of TNT(Z) alloys released from immersion testing at each time intervals show extremely small concentrations (<10 µg/L). It indicated that good biocompatibility during culture with the negligible corrosion ions. High strength-to-modulus ratio ß Ti alloys together with excellent biological response show their prospect for biomedical applications.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: There are only a few studies on sex hormones in females of different ages suffering from depression, and their conclusions are not uniform until now. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between the severity of depression in females and factors such as sex hormones and differences in sex hormone levels in females of different ages, exploring variations after treatment. METHODS: A total of 169 females with depression were selected and divided into the first-episode (91 cases) and recurrent (78 cases) groups. Then, on the basis of their age, the first-episode patients were divided into the young (48 cases, age < 45 years), perimenopausal (20 cases, 45-55 years), and elderly groups (23 cases, age > 55 years); the patients with recurrent depression were classified into the young (37 cases, age < 45 years), perimenopausal (19 cases, 45-55 years), and elderly groups (22 cases, age > 55 years). The patients were assessed in accordance with the International Classification of Diseases of mental and behavioral disorders. The serum progesterone, prolactin, estradiol, and testosterone levels in the patients were measured, and differences in sex hormone levels of the groups were analyzed. RESULTS: The estradiol level was negatively correlated with age and the prolactin level was positively correlated with occupation. The severity of depression in females was found to be negatively correlated with age. The serum progesterone and estradiol levels in the young group were significantly higher than those in the elderly group, regardless of the first episode or recurrence. Estradiol levels in the perimenopausal and elderly groups with first-episode depression were significantly higher than those in the same group with recurrent depression. However, there was no significant difference in the serum progesterone, prolactin, estradiol, and testosterone levels in the recurrent group before and after treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Sex hormone levels, especially estradiol, varied among females of different ages suffering from depression. Recurrent depression also has a certain effect on sex hormone levels in females. Not only should the age and relapse be considered when studying the sex hormone levels of females with depression, but also attention should be paid to whether the patients have used antidepressants before their sexual hormonal testing.

RESUMO

This paper systematically investigates the biomedical performance of selective laser melted (SLM) porous Ti6Al4V ELI scaffolds for bone implantation through in vitro and in vivo experiments. Scaffolds with pore sizes of 500 µm, 600 µm and 700 µm and porosities of 60% and 70% were manufactured in order to explore the optimum pore size and porosity. Rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (rBMMSCs) were used in the in vitro experiments. Cell Counting Kit-8, live/dead staining and scanning electron microscope were used to assess the cytotoxicity of the porous scaffolds. DNA content quantification was performed to investigate cell proliferation on the porous scaffolds. The osteogenic differentiation of cells was measured by alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and osteogenic gene expressions, including bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2), collagen type 1α1 (COL-1), osteocalcin (OCN), osteopontin (OPN) and runt-related transcription factor-2 (RUNX-2). The Sprague-Dawley (SD) rat models with distal femoral condyles defect were used in the in vivo experiments. Micro-CT analysis and histological analysis were performed after implantation surgery to reveal the bone ingrowth into the porous scaffolds. All in vitro data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey post hoc tests, in vivo data were analyzed using Kruskall-Wallis ANOVA and Conover-Inman post-hoc test. Based on the in vitro and in vivo experiments, it is found that the porous scaffolds manufactured by SLM did not induce a cytotoxic effect. Among all the porous scaffolds, the scaffold with a pore size of 500 µm and porosity of 60% showed the best cell proliferation and osteogenic differentiation (in vitro experiments) and bone ingrowth (in vivo experiments).

RESUMO

Selective laser melting (SLM) additive manufacturing of pure tungsten encounters nearly all intractable difficulties of SLM metals fields due to its intrinsic properties. The key factors, including powder characteristics, layer thickness, and laser parameters of SLM high density tungsten are elucidated and discussed in detail. The main parameters were designed from theoretical calculations prior to the SLM process and experimentally optimized. Pure tungsten products with a density of 19.01 g/cm3 (98.50% theoretical density) were produced using SLM with the optimized processing parameters. A high density microstructure is formed without significant balling or macrocracks. The formation mechanisms for pores and the densification behaviors are systematically elucidated. Electron backscattered diffraction analysis confirms that the columnar grains stretch across several layers and parallel to the maximum temperature gradient, which can ensure good bonding between the layers. The mechanical properties of the SLM-produced tungsten are comparable to that produced by the conventional fabrication methods, with hardness values exceeding 460 HV0.05 and an ultimate compressive strength of about 1 GPa. This finding offers new potential applications of refractory metals in additive manufacturing.
